Nowadays, everything around us is very hectic, hurried and the lives of others often seem perfect to us from social networks. This can build stress in us and the desire to have everything “chip top”. Escape from everything is so often a vacation. But not everyone can afford it, or they can usually afford it 1-2 times a year. They only survive the whole year and cannot switch off completely, gain new inspiration, have time to compare ideas, or just meditate and enjoy the presence. Not only the circumstances around us have a great influence on our psyche, but also the environment in which we find ourselves.
Mental well-being is most affected by the environment in which we spend the most time. Unfortunately, we don’t affect the work environment that much, but the home where we wake up every morning and where we return tired, yes. Sadly, a lot of people save money for a few days on vacation, but they don’t invest that much in beautifying their home. Just remember how you feel when you wake in at a beautiful holiday hotel. And now go back to your classic bedroom. Do you feel the same? I bet not. Most of us have white smooth bare walls at home, a poorly designed furniture layout, a lot of unnecessary decorations, a combination of several colors and materials that life itself has gradually accumulated. The whole thing then does not look harmonious and it has no calming effect at all.
Shouldn’t the home be the place we love not only because we have our loved ones and personal things in it, but also because we feel comfortable in terms of design? The place that recharges us every day will help us escape the hectic life around us and provide us with a safe haven for rest?
If you don’t want or can’t afford an architect or interior designer, in today’s article you’ll find some tips on how to make your home a more pleasant place to relax. I believe that even a small change can have a big impact on our psyche. I have also selected a few inspirations from Czech homes for the article, which do not spoil with luxury or above-standard large rooms, but still look very pleasant, tasteful, and non-chaotic.
1. Neutral colors and natural materials as a basis
You may have read and heard it somewhere, but repetition is the mother of wisdom. A neutral base is always a good choice and you can’t spoil anything. On the contrary, the interior is less subject to fashion trends and you can change it more based on current needs or the season. It’s a good idea to set a few materials and colors to stick to at the beginning. I definitely do not recommend combining more than 2 types / colors of wood (unless it is the cornerstone of your concept). Often, such a mish-mash is created, which looks chaotic and does not help the tidy interior even to a dot.
You can then add 1-2 bold colors to this base. If you still like a lot of cheerful colors, it is better to work with it from the beginning and use these colors on things that can be easily changed. For example, bedding, decorations, paintings, blankets. These things do not require much effort, and if it does not please your eye, it can easily be changed.
If you don’t even know how to conceive the whole space, most architects and interior designers offer consultations that will help you escape from this vicious circle full of endlessly inspiring pictures and recommendations from others who are not so familiar in this field.
You may now be in a situation where you live in a more colorful interior, but you don’t feel good there. But you don’t know where to start and you don’t have money / time / energy for a bigger reconstruction at the moment. Before the change itself, find a few inspirations about what style you like and write down exactly what you can gradually apply at home. I would definitely start by painting and unifying textiles – curtains, bedding, piece rugs. You can paint the existing furniture at home or stick it with wallpaper. A more radical cleaning can also help, getting rid of various smaller decorations (dust traps), arranging books and throwing away damaged or unnecessary things.
2. Abstract images for the revival of a bare wall
Sometimes there is a large free space in our interior, which we can simply enliven with an abstract painting in neutral colors so that it does not attract all the attention, but only completes the overall atmosphere and cozy space. The paintings have a great advantage that we can replace them very easily without costing us a lot of effort. At the same time, they are a very special element in the interior. It is also a great solution for rental housing, where we do not want or cannot invest in demanding modifications. My favorite paintings include abstract works by Luciano art, whose painting is also on the visualization below.
Another great element that fits into absolutely every household are plants. Whether it’s just a small cactus or a larger plant that will almost become the dominant feature of the room. Plants have a positive effect on our psyche and are a great ageless supplement. You just need to pay a little attention to choosing the right one. We need to think about how much light we have in the room, whether we can take care of it regularly or it will be better to get some undemanding, which we do not have to water every day.
4. Plenty of light and its diversity
The quality of lighting undoubtedly has an impact on our mental well-being and health. It is always best to enable natural lighting, which also saves our wallet. If possible, I recommend trying to bring the light as deep as possible. Whether skylights or glass walls / doors. A dimmer with which we can regulate the light is definitely a great helper for artificial lighting. Even better is the combination with LED strips, lamps or candles. Depending on the type of room and activity, depending on the color of the light. Cold shades are more suitable for work, warm than on the contrary for rest. Additional lighting creates a pleasant atmosphere according to your needs and in the evening prepares your body for sleep much more than a powerful ceiling lamp.
5. Influence your senses with scents
Pleasant delicate scents positively stimulate our senses and it would be a shame not to use it in interiors. Not only for you, but also for your guests, coming to the interior will then be much more lively and memorable. It’s up to you what form you choose, whether candles, fresh flowers or some aroma diffuser.

As we can see in all the examples, it is not so much the size of the space or luxury that matters, but the ability to keep the place clean, unpaid and, above all, not to be afraid of neutral colors. They are not boring, but on the contrary, they will prepare a great foundation for you, which you can adapt to your current needs according to your taste and calmly enrich it with our favorite colors.
